Ask ten Year 10 students which are the hardest HSC subjects and you will get ten different answers, most of them based on a rumour from an older sibling. The honest answer is that difficulty is measurable, but not in the way most rankings pretend. Using the official UAC Report on the Scaling of the 2025 NSW HSC, we can see exactly how rare a Band 6 is in each course and how strong the competition is. That data tells a very different story to the usual “Maths Extension 2 is the hardest” answer.

What are the hardest HSC subjects in 2026?

If “hardest” means “least likely to produce a top band”, the 2025 data points to English Standard, Community and Family Studies, Biology, Investigating Science and Ancient History. In English Standard, fewer than 1% of the 33,651 students who completed the course finished in Band 6. In Community and Family Studies it was 5%. In Biology, the biggest science course in the state with 20,710 students, only 7% reached Band 6. Compare that with Mathematics Advanced, where 23% of students achieved a Band 6, and the usual difficulty rankings start to look upside down.

Why is “hardest” the wrong question to ask on its own?

Because a subject can be hard in at least four different ways, and they do not overlap neatly. A course can be conceptually demanding, content heavy, brutally competitive, or simply stingy with top bands. Maths Extension 2 is conceptually the toughest content in the state, yet 41% of its students landed in the top band, because the people who choose it are already exceptional mathematicians. Biology is far more accessible content, but the top band is nearly six times rarer. Both are “hard”. They are just hard in opposite directions, and confusing the two is how students end up in the wrong subjects.

How do you measure HSC difficulty with real data?

We use three numbers that NESA and UAC actually publish, plus one judgement call:

  • Band 6 rate (UAC Table A2). The percentage of a course’s students who finished in the top band. This is the cleanest measure of how rare excellence is.
  • Mean scaled mark (UAC Table A3). Not a difficulty rating, but a reliable proxy for how academically strong the cohort is, which tells you how hard it will be to rank near the top.
  • Band 2 rate (UAC Table A2). How many students the course leaves at the bottom, which shows the risk of taking it without solid foundations.
  • Content volume. Not in the data, so we treat it separately in our HSC subject workload guide.

Which HSC subjects give out the fewest Band 6s?

Here are the 2025 figures for a spread of major courses, ordered from the stingiest Band 6 rate upward. All numbers come straight from UAC Tables A2 and A3.

The pattern that jumps out is that the courses students pick because they sound “easier” are frequently the ones where a top band is hardest to reach.

Why is English Standard the hardest place in the HSC to earn a Band 6?

English Standard is the single clearest example of the difference between easy content and an easy mark. The median HSC mark in the course was 73, and 55% of students sat in Band 4. Fewer than one student in a hundred reached Band 6. To get there you effectively need to be at the very top of a cohort of more than 33,000 students. In English Advanced, by contrast, 13% of students reached Band 6, and the median mark was 82. If a student is capable of Advanced and is sitting near the top of a Standard class, staying in Standard is usually the more punishing choice, not the safer one. Which HSC subjects have the strongest competition?

Mean scaled mark is the best public proxy for cohort strength, because it reflects how the students in a course performed across everything else they studied. On the 2025 figures the strongest cohorts were Mathematics Extension 2 (43.4), Mathematics Extension 1 (39.7), English Extension 1 (36.1), English Advanced (32.8), Chemistry (32.0), Mathematics Advanced (31.9), Economics (31.4) and Physics (31.0). These are the courses where simply keeping pace is an achievement, because almost everyone around you is a strong student. Does taking a hard subject mean a lower ATAR?

Not automatically, and this is where most students go wrong. Scaling rewards your position within a cohort, not the reputation of the subject. A student in the middle of the Chemistry cohort can finish with a lower scaled mark than a student at the very top of a Business Studies cohort. The trap runs both ways: choosing a hard subject you cannot rank well in hurts you, and choosing an “easy” subject where a top band is nearly unreachable hurts you too. Which subjects are riskiest if your foundations are shaky?

Look at the Band 2 rates. Physics left 14% of its 2025 students in Band 2, the highest of the major sciences, and Mathematics Standard 2 left 12%. Those courses punish gaps. Physics in particular is polarising: it has both a strong Band 6 rate of 13% and the widest tail, which means students tend to either understand it or fall behind badly. An illustrative example: two students, two kinds of hard

Consider two Year 11 students choosing their final subject (this is an illustrative example, not real student data). Mia is a confident writer who is currently third in her English Standard class. On the numbers, her realistic ceiling in Standard is a high Band 5, because Band 6 goes to under 1% of that course. Moving to Advanced puts her in a stronger cohort but gives her a genuine path to the top band. Jarrah is choosing Physics because it “scales well”, but he is scraping through Maths Advanced. The Physics data says he faces a course with a 14% Band 2 rate and a cohort averaging 31.0 scaled. For Mia the harder-sounding subject is the better bet. For Jarrah it is not.

How should you use this ranking when choosing HSC subjects?

Treat difficulty as a planning input, not a veto. Three practical rules come out of the data:

  • Check the Band 6 rate before you assume a subject is a soft option. Low Band 6 rates mean a low ceiling for most students.
  • Match cohort strength to your realistic rank. Being top ten in a strong cohort beats being mid-pack in a weak one.
  • Never drop to a lower course purely to protect a mark. The Standard versus Advanced English data shows how often that backfires.
