Does Maths Advanced scale well in the HSC? Yes, comfortably above average. In the 2025 HSC, Mathematics Advanced had a mean scaled mark of 31.9 out of 50 per unit, which puts it in the upper group of large courses and well ahead of both Mathematics Standard 2 and English Standard. It does not scale like the Extension courses, and it never has, but the idea that Maths Advanced “scales badly” is simply wrong.

Here is what the actual UAC data says, what the number means for your ATAR, and when Maths Advanced is and is not the right choice.

What did Maths Advanced actually scale to in 2025?

The Universities Admissions Centre publishes a scaling report each year showing, for every HSC course, the mean scaled mark per unit out of 50. For Mathematics Advanced in 2025, with 16,809 candidates, the mean HSC mark was 39.6 and the mean scaled mark was 31.9.

Put that beside the rest of the mathematics ladder and the picture is clear:

How does that compare to other big HSC subjects?

A mean scaled mark only means something in context. These are all from the same 2025 UAC report:

Maths Advanced sits with Chemistry, Physics and Economics in the strong second tier, roughly 8.6 marks per unit above Mathematics Standard 2 and 11.5 above English Standard. That gap is large. Across two units it is the difference that decides ATARs.

Why does Maths Advanced scale where it does?

Scaling is not a reward for difficulty. UAC scales each course according to the measured academic strength of the students who take it, judged by how that same group performs across all of their other courses. Maths Advanced scales well because it attracts a strong, largely self-selected cohort, and because roughly a third of that cohort is also carrying Mathematics Extension 1. Of the 16,809 Maths Advanced candidates in 2025, 11,521 sat the two-unit course only.

Does a good scaled mark mean an easy mark?

No, and this is where students get hurt. A high mean scaled mark tells you the cohort is strong. A strong cohort means you are competing against strong students for every rank. The scaling is generous to the course, not to any individual in it.

In 2025 the median HSC mark in Mathematics Advanced was 80, and the course had a wide spread of scaled outcomes. Sitting mid-pack in Maths Advanced does not automatically beat sitting near the top of Mathematics Standard 2. It usually does, but not automatically.

Should you drop from Maths Advanced to Standard 2 to protect your ATAR?

The honest answer is that it depends on where you would land in each.

The 8.6-mark-per-unit gap in mean scaled marks is genuinely large, so a student performing anywhere near the middle of Maths Advanced is generally better off staying. The case for moving is when Maths Advanced is consuming so much study time that it is dragging down three other courses, or when the student is sitting in the bottom band and losing confidence rather than marks.

Two things are worth knowing before you decide. First, moving down means competing against a much larger cohort of 31,762 candidates for rank. Second, your other units still have to add up: see 10 vs 12 units and subject choice and our subject selection guide before you change anything.

What does this look like for a real student?

An illustrative example, not a real student. Two Year 12 students each finish with an HSC mark of 80.

  • Student A takes Mathematics Advanced. The mean scaled mark for the course is 31.9 per unit, and an 80 sits at roughly the course median, so their scaled contribution lands close to that course mean.
  • Student B takes Mathematics Standard 2. The mean scaled mark is 23.3 per unit, but an 80 sits well above that course’s median of 73, so their scaled contribution lands above their course mean.

Student A still comes out ahead across their two units, but by less than the raw gap between 31.9 and 23.3 suggests, because Student B is further up their own cohort. That is the correct way to think about scaling: your position in the course, applied to the course’s scale, not the course’s headline number on its own.

Which subjects pair well with Maths Advanced?

Maths Advanced is the entry point to the Extension courses, and it shares real content overlap with Physics, Chemistry and Economics, all of which also scale in the low thirties. Students taking Advanced plus Extension 1 plus a strong science tend to build an ATAR-efficient pattern, provided they can carry the workload. How do you actually do well in Maths Advanced?

Because the cohort is strong, the marks come from precision rather than effort alone. Three things separate the students we see finishing in the top bands:

  • Working the harder end of every topic. The last two questions in a topic exercise are where the exam questions come from.
  • Past papers by topic, early. Not saved for October. Topic-sorted past HSC questions from Term 1 of Year 12.
  • Fixing method, not answers. A wrong final answer with sound method loses one mark. A right answer with no working loses more.

Is Maths Advanced worth it in 2026?

For most students who can hold a solid mark in it, yes. It scales well above average, it keeps university options open in engineering, science, commerce and computing, and it is the prerequisite mindset for the Extension courses. The subject to be cautious about is not Maths Advanced. It is taking Maths Advanced while carrying two other content-heavy courses and no plan.

Yes. Mathematics Extension 1 is studied alongside Mathematics Advanced, not instead of it, so dropping Advanced means giving up the Extension courses as well.
